Homogenous catalysts can be used in wet air oxidation to enhance oxidation. A homogenous catalyst is most effective when soluble in the wastewater, which can be accomplished by pH adjustment of the solution. Bench scale results using a copper catalyst in bench scale wet air oxidation showed that copper is most effective in low and very high pH solutions for the destruction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) with acetic acid solutions and oxalic acid solutions. Bench scale results using an iron catalyst showed that it was most effective at a low pH for the total organic carbon (TOC) destruction of oxalic acid and COD destruction of chlorophenol. Bench scale results using a vanadium catalyst showed that it was most effective at neutral and high pHs for the COD destruction of acetic acid.
