Case Studies of Low Speed Operation on Dry Gas Seals and Bearings in Ethylene Compressors

This paper will discuss the design features of dry gas seals and bearings that are affected during turning gear, slow roll and reverse rotation of centrifugal compressors. Data and formulas will be presented that can be used to determine the minimum desirable speed for slow roll as well as the breakaway torque for journal bearings. Case studies, field data and in-house testing data will be presented related to these various modes of operation.
