Consistent discrete adjoint solvers for turbulent flows can offer guaranteed convergence as long as the underlying flow solver exhibits asymptotic convergence. This assumption often does not hold because of the used numerical schemes or in strongly separated flows. In this work we reconsider the Recursive Projection method to stabilize and improve the convergence of the adjoint iteration in such cases. This method allows the identification of the unstable modes in the flow solver iteration and eventually also allowing more insight into the reasons for this non-asymptotic behavior.
