摘要

In 1908 an enormous release of energy occurred approximately 8 kilometers above ground level over the Tunguska Valley in central Siberia. It is generally agreed that this event resulted from the sudden disruption of a large meteor high in the atmosphere. However, the type of meteor which caused the event has been the subject of considerable debate, with some investigators concluding it was a comet while others suggested that a stony asteroid was responsible. The present study shows that a carbonaceous chondroid, the most common variety of meteor, was the most probable cause of this event.
