Technologies have advanced so far in the recent past that it is almost unheard of today for individual people in a singular functional area to work alone on a new project, or for anyone to use a singular tool or approach to develop the project. Today's management approach is to use Integrated Product Teams (IPT's) comprised of persons with expertise and experience in Design Engineering, Stress Analysis, Materials Engineering, Producibility, Operations, Quality Engineering, Procurement, and R&D. Use of resources outside of the business unit has become more common, and including Universities and Suppliers in the Team is becoming commonplace. Tools available for the Team are also developing at a rapid rate. Integration of short "on site" Training Seminars and Workshops, Solidification Analysis, Rapid Data Development for Critical Design Parameters, Correlation of Quality Acceptance Criteria and Properties Requirements, Rapid Prototyping of whole parts and/or critical sections, and Testing Prototypes are some of the ways IPT's are determining success before the start of production. An example of the organized approach taken by one IPT looks at the conversion of a complex and critical part from a multi-part fabrication to a single piece casting and the planned approach which included: existing design review, available data review, ROM cost, preliminary casting design, supplier selection, team review & analysis, design refinement, critical requirements & questions, casting quality requirements & testing, demonstration of capability, test section casting, fatigue data development, tooling, pre-production samples, first article testing, design refinement, and prototype production.
