Medical Surveillance in the Workplace - An overview

Medical surveillance is the planned process of employee health assessments and monitoring with the intent to prevent work-related ill health. Medical surveillance requires an understanding of the hazards present in the workplace, the level of workplace exposure to chemicals or physical agents, the potential health effects which may occur and the medical assessment and evaluation which may identify physiological effects due to exposure. Medical surveillance activities may include general health status assessment and questionnaires as well as specific medical tests. The results of medical surveillance procedures help to determine an individual worker's fitness to perform his / her workplace task, and in addition, ongoing medical surveillance and trend analysis of groups of employees may indicate the need for further exposure monitoring and /or workplace modification to prevent / decrease employee exposure.
