THE STANLEY WORK'S PROGRAM FOR PLATING AND FINISHING IMPROVEMENT -A TRUE 'UP-FRONT' ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM

As part of its overall waste minimization program and commitment to manufacturing. The Stanley Works is critically reviewing and improving its major pollution generating manufacturing processes - metal finishing and plating. This is a true 'up front' environmental improvement in that the focus is the manufacturing process, not waste treatment or even recycling. When we address the manufacturing goals of decreased cost, increased quality, and enhanced customer service, we correspondingly meet environmental program goals.This paper will describe this program, from its environmental genesis to its approach and methodology. Examples of results will be presented, along with a discussion of the resulting environmental benefits.
