ROOM ACOUSTIC DESIGN FOR SMALL MULTICHANNEL STUDIOS

To realize natural and robust monitoring environment for a small multichannel studio, two factors, bass management and surround loudspeaker layout must be considered. Bass management is dedicated to ensure that the frequency response of each channel is consistent. One of the standard ways for surround layout is "Rec. ITU-R BS 775-1". It is important that any surround layouts must be started from ITU-R placement. However, smaller rooms, another layout often gives better solution from the viewpoint of the naturalness of the monitoring impression. This paper reports difficulties and practical ways for a small multichannel studio design. In this paper, bass management and surround loudspeaker layout are focused. Measurement data and design samples of existing studios are also introduced.
