Biodiversity: Potential for Application in Agriculture in the Mekong Delta

Plant diversification plays an important role in developing sustainable agriculture due to: (ⅰ) it provides cultivars/plant types adapted to different ecological condition or having good characters; (ⅱ) it provides parental material for breeding and improving cultivars to enhance the ability of tolerance to adverse environment as well as resistance to insects and diseases. In future, our strategy is to evaluate valuable genes from many sources: introduced, local varieties and wild species for improving desirable traits especially seed quality.
