Nowadays seismic assessment of bridges is recognized as a primary objective in the seismic protectionrnpolicy of many earthquake prone countries. Accordingly, the development of an assessment procedurernwhich gives reliable results and, at the same time, is sufficiently simple to be applied on a large population ofrnbridges in a short time is very useful. In this paper a Direct Displacement-Based seismic Assessment (DDBA)rnprocedure satisfying these requirements is proposed. DDBA has been applied to hypothetical bridge configurationsrnas well as to some existing bridges. The approach reliability is verified by performing Incremental DynamicrnAnalysis with response spectrum compatible accelerograms.
