A major safeguards challenge within electrochemical used nuclear fuel reprocessing is the tracking of salt composition as it moves through a facility. Practical difficulties include elevated temperatures, the absence of an input accountancy tank, and the combination of batch-wise fuel addition and batch-wise product harvesting with continuous fuel dissolution and continuous cathode deposition. Further complicating the mass balance is the fact that salt is collected and recycled at several points in the process.
