As public works agencies look to install new buried pipelines in anrneconomical, environmentally-friendly, and minimally intrusive manner, the adoption ofrntrenchless technologies such as horizontal directional drilling (HDD) has increased.rnToday, HDD equipment is engaged in projects involving pipeline installations of utilityrnnetworks such as water, wastewater, telecommunications, electrical, telephone, oilrnproduct, and natural gas. This increase in utilization of the technology has resulted in arngreater potential for risk and damage to subsurface and surface features. Designers andrnowners are continually exploring methods to assure quality on HDD projects. Thisrnpaper discusses quality assurance and quality control measures to mitigation installationrelatedrnissues including: 1) heaving of surface features; 2) damage to existing subsurfacernstructures; 3) product pipe damage; and 4) surface settlement. Adherence to thesernrecommendations will better increase the likelihood of a successful horizontalrndirectional drilling project.
