A series of ru-supported catalysts were prepared and characterised to study the effect of support interaction in the production of higher alcohols from CO hydrogenation.Single oxides with various degrees of reducibility such as MoO_2,ZrO_2,WO_3 and TiO_2 were used as supports.Al_2O_3 was used as reference.Partial reduction to various extents of the supports was confirmed by XPS analyses.However,the reduction of these supports was very different:while no reduction was observed for Al_2O_3,ZrO_2 was little reduced,with MoO_3 being the most rduced support.The catalytic tests indicate that the selectivity for the formaiton of oxygenates seems to be linked to the reducibility of the support,since with non-easily reducible oxides (Al_2O_3,ZrO_2) the alcohol production was very low.On the contrary better selectivities were obtianed on WO_3 and especially on MoO_3 the more easily reducible oxides.
