Intranet approach to the GTC configuration management

Abstract: Due to its size and complexity the GTC Projectrepresents a challenge for configuration management. Onthe one hand there is a need to record and store theenormous amount of configuration documentationgenerated during the different phases of the project(technical specifications, engineering drawings,interface control documents, acceptance tests, etc.),so that it can be easily accessed on-line by an ProjectOffice member. Moreover, this documentation has to beproperly related to the different configurationelements and interfaces composing the GTC's ProductTree. On the other hand, the need arises to simplifyall the configuration control procedures established bySystem Engineering and their associated work flow(document and baseline approval, configuration changerequests and evaluation, approval or rejection of thosechanges, etc.). Intranet technology has proven to be anexcellent and innovative tool for satisfying both needsin an integrated manner. This integrated philosophy ofthe GTC intranet application helps each member of theProject Office fulfill his or her own responsibilities,reduces paper work and minimizes errors. It alsoassists in locating and accessing any configurationinformation with a single tool (any standard Internetnavigator) regardless of the original format of suchinformation. This paper presents the main features ofthis intranet application, as well as the intendedfuture extension to other management disciplines(project management, quality management, etc.).!3
