Harmonizing the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory with Mandatory Reporting Data for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Sector

The data comparison and the discrepancies noted above have provided the impetus for conducting further analysis of the 2013 GHGRP data that was released by EPA in September 2014 and updated in early 2015 (U.S. EPA, 2015b) and comparing it to recent changes noted in the 2013 national GHG Inventory. This analysis is part of API's long standing effort to improve emission estimation methodologies for the Petroleum and Natural Gas industry sector and its ongoing collaboration with the U.S. EPA to improve the accuracy and relevance of the national GHG Inventory for depicting methane emissions from Petroleum Systems and Natural Gas Systems. A new set of technical changes to the GHGRP were promulgated at the end of 2014 which should remove any lingering data ambiguities when the information is publically available later in 2015. Additionally, new amendments to the reporting rule are expected to be promulgated in 2015 and take effect in 2016 which will further expand the scope of reporting for petroleum and natural gas systems.
