Calculation Method of Shaded Fraction According to the Movements Type for Kinetic Façade

Accurate calculation of the shaded area is necessary to evaluate the energy demand during the cooling season because the shaded area has a substantial effect on the solar heat gain through the windows. Most of the existing methods for calculating the shaded area are for fixed shad-ing devices using simple shapes. These simplified methods can result in errors if they are used to calculate the shaded areas generated by kinetic façades. In this study, the calculation of shaded areas using the planar polygon method, which considers irregular shapes, was exam-ined. The types of kinetic façades considered were categorized in terms of aspects of their shading and movement elements, such as their lengths, tilt angles, and aperture sizes. Finally, equations for calculation of the shaded fraction based on the categorized movement elements of different kinetic façades were derived using a program that applies the irregular shapes and movements shading devices in kinetic façade.
