Building energy consumptions can be varied widely by building characteristics, mechanical systems and occupant behaviors. The Korean government has made a lot of effort to save energy consumptions in new constructed buildings by now. However, a few has been done for existing buildings. For improving energy efficiency in existing buildings, it is needed to improve building envelope and several systems, as well as to provide an appropriate education to the occupants to use energy more efficiently. In this study, therefore, effect of occupant behaviors on heating energy consumptions in multi-family residential buildings in South Korea was studied as a preliminary study for improving energy efficiency in existing buildings. Heating energy consumptions was analyzed in this study using a four-parameter change-point regression model, and the largest heating energy consuming units were extracted, which have a large opportunity to reduce heating energy consumptions by lowering their thermostat setting-point temperature.
