There is still a large number of fretting problems that are encountered in nuclear power equipment today. In this paper, fretting-related failures failures and accidents of nuclear power components and structures are analyzed. it was found that fretting is inspuerable and is a major contributor to the failure of nuclear components and structures. With the increasing number of failures that are related to fretting, researdch and analysis of fretting damage are key elements in designing nuclear power equipment for reliable performance and og operating life. Although the nominal dsign lfie of the nuclear reactor is usually 40 years, it is possible to extend it to 60 years. perating experience showed, however, that the actual life of a large number of components and structures is only 20 percent of the design lfie~([1]). From econcomical and safety considerations, this poses a serious concern, particularly when fretting failure is associated with critical components, e.g., steam generators.
