Experiences in Development and Use of a Low Cost OLAP Tool for Analyzing Agricultural Data

On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) is emerging as a very powerful paradigm for strategic analysis of databases. Uptake of OLAP tools in agriculture sector is hindered by their cost and the investment required on acquisition, integration and standardization of required data. Volume of data, multiplicity of hierarchies, temporal distribution and multiplicity of aggregation are major issues in analysis of agricultural data. Analysis of multi-variate agricultural systems can be performed in an efficient manner through OLAP tools. In mis paper we will discuss the design, implementation and application of a multi-dimensional OLAP tool on a previously developed pilot agricultural data warehouse containing pest scouting, farmer demographics and meteorological data.
