The IEEE 802.1 le specifies Hybrid Coordination Function (HCF) as an effort toward enhancing the best-effort-service oriented IEEE 802.11 MAC with the capability of Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning. HCF provides guaranteed services by way of contention-free mechanism and differentiated services by way of contention-based mechanism. In this paper, we provides performance analysis of the complete contention-based mechanism, also known as Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function (EDCF). In particular, we detailed the effect of contention window sizes and arbitration inter-frame spaces in terms of service differentiation and system capacity. Through an extensive set of simulations, we show that the analytical model accurately characterizes the behavior of EDCF.
