DFOS - Distributed File Service for Operating System Courseware

This paper presents DFOS, an instructional distributed file service for computer science students of an operating system (OS) class at a fourth-year undergraduate level or a first-year graduate level. Distributed systems is an increasingly important topic in modern OS. DFOS is designed to supplement Nachos5.0j. The motivation behind this was to extend a Nachos file service to a distributed environment. DFOS is designed to operate in a heterogeneous environment of different machines and OSs. DFOS consists of a 4 phase project: interprocess communication (IPC), transparency, directory & file services, and replication.
