High-Luminance, High-Efficiency, and Simple-Structured Flat Discharge Lamp for LCD Backlightings

A simple-structured, 5.2-in.-diagonal low pressure Hg flat discharge lamp was developed for car-navigation LCD backlightings. Excellent optical characteristics were obtained by optimizing the drive pulse waveform; luminance of 30,000 cd/m~2 and luminous efficiency of 50 Im/W were achieved. The uniformity is 92 % without the use of a diffuser sheet. The luminance can be dimmed down to 4 % of the peak value by changing both drive pulse amplitude and pulse interval.
