We have presented a new environmentally friendly method for protein immobilization on cellulose via avidin-biotin linkage. The adsorption of avidins on unmodified cellulose was found to be rather low. However, the carboxylation of cellulose surface significantly increased the adsorption of avidins. Moreover, the covalent conjugation was seen to produce more uniform distribution of attached avidins. All prepared cellulose-avidin biointerfaces were found to bind biotinylated molecules. Overall, the robust nature of proposed method, coupled with its mild reaction conditions, has a potential to open new venues for immobilizing antibodies and other functionalities on cellulosic materials.
