Design of the Universal 2-D Cellular Automata Bases Generator and Its VLSI Implementation

The first VLSI implementation of the universal two-dimensional (2-D) cellular automata bases (CAB) generator is present in this paper. The universal 2-D CAB generator can be used in the implementation of 2-D cellular automata transform (CAT) and inverse CAT (ICAT). To facilitate the development of a universal 2-D CAB generator, we adopted a CA cell structure with programmable additive rules to generate 1-D CAB first, and then utilized the canonical products of 1-D CAB to perform the 2-D CAB. We have accomplished simulations of the universal 8x8 2-D CAB generator by using CANDENCE tools. We also have completed the circuit synthesis of our 2-D CAB generator by using the SYNOPSYS tools with the TSMC 0.35um CMOS data-path cell-library. Finally, we used Apollo tool to accomplish IC layout. The maximum operation frequency was 55 MHz, and the area size was 1.8225 mm2. It shows that the architecture of the proposed 2-D CAB generator is suitable for VLSI realization.
