VERIFICATION OF A FINITE ELEMENT MODEL FOR WOOD-BASED FLOOR STRUCTURES WITH LATERAL REINFORCEMENTS

A finite element model for predicting static deflections and natural frequencies of wood-based floors with lateral reinforcements including bridging, blocking, strapping, bracing, and strong-back has been developed and presented in another paper entitled "A FINITE ELEMENT MODEL FOR WOOD-BASED FLOOR STRUCTURES WITH LATERAL REINFORCEMENTS" at this conference. This paper describes the verification of the model. To verify the model, laboratory tests were conducted on full size wood-based floors with various types of lateral reinforcements and other construction features to measure their static deflections and natural frequencies. Tests were also conducted to measure the mechanical properties of the joists and fastener-to-wood connections. Using the measured properties as input, the predicted deflections and natural frequencies for the test floors agreed with the measured values reasonably well. It is concluded that the model is unique particularly in modelling floors with lateral reinforcements. The principal advantage of the model comes from its use of only measurable parameters including stiffness of lateral reinforcements and their connection properties to achieve good predictions. This special feature along with other advantages makes the model a useful tool not only for wood-based floor performance research and design, but also for developing new wood-based floor construction products and floor systems.
