Wood was extensively used for both interior and exterior applications in the construction of ancient buildings. These old wooden structures, such as traditional ancient buildings, have deteriorated and their stability is usually evaluated by personal observation. Scientific and reasonable methods of evaluation for the accurate assessment of the building's condition are now necessary. Two nondestructive evaluation (NDE) methods to assess the quality of structural members are used : an ultrasonic test and drilling resistance test. The objective of this research is to investigate the applicability of the ultrasonic method and drilling resistance method in the evaluation of the quality of structural members in ancient buildings. As expected, it was indicated that both the ultrasonic and drilling resistance methods would be used to detect large internal deteriorations and voids in a structural member. Specifically, the result of the drilling resistance test showed the exact location and size of internal deterioration for structural members. It was also found that there is a strong relationship between the ultrasonic transmission time (or velocity) and the extent of deterioration size through visual inspection.
