A rugged, low cost, point infrared sensor was developed for use in the harshrnwelding environment. A heat transfer analysis was performed to study the effects ofrndisturbances to the welding process on the infrared energy exchange between thernweldment and sensor. In experiments, weld bead penetration depth was monitored andrncontrolled during both gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) and submerged arc weldingrn(SAW) processes. The infrared energy exchange between a defined area on the topsidernplate surface and the sensor was monitored during the welding process. Changes in thernplate geometry were introduced to the traveling arc to disturb the welding process.rnConstant depth of penetration was maintained in the presence of these perturbations byrnfeedback control of the welding process parameters.
