Although the concept of active noise control wasrnfirst introduced about seven decades ago, it is thernrecent advances in the DSP-based on-linerncomputational capabilities, adaptive controlrntheory, compact low frequency acoustic drivers,rnand understanding the dynamics of vibroacousticrnsystems, that have enabled thernfeasibility of commercial active noise controlrnand active vibration control systems. In additionrnto describing the fundamentals of activerntechnology, this paper presents a hybrid adaptiverncontrol approach for the design of an activernsystem. The combined feedforward/feedbackrnactive controller provides the ability to attenuaternboth repetitive and random excitations. Resultsrnfrom the application of this technology to thernautomotive vehicles will be illustrated andrndiscussed.
