Particle size distributions have been measured for several different powders in the size range of interest for ceramic processing between 0.1 and 400μm. Comparison between the rapid and popular method of laser diffraction and slower, arguably more accurate, methods such as sedimentation and image analysis have shown median diameters to be reasonably consistent between the methods (5-30%). For the finer powders less than a few microns the tails of the distributions are less consistent between the methods with laser diffraction apparently overestimating the d_(v90) sometimes by up to a factor of 2.
