In the paint production process, preparation of the millbase is not only the most costly step, but also the limiting element as regards production capacity. The traditional solution of using additives limits the increase in pigment loading and thus in production capacity. These limitations are due to the effects and interactions of the additives (dispersing agents, surface modifiers, etc.). The approach of Ciba Specialty Chemicals is now to add the supporting agents, derivatives of the pigment, to the surface of the pigment during the production process, with little or no effect on the resulting shade. The approach is called X-treatment. This concept allows pigment loading of, for example, PR 254 to be increased from 30%(without) to 40% (with surface treatment) with the same viscosity and the same, excellent letdown stability. This leads to an increase of productivity of about 30%.
