摘要

Many in-situ stress measurements were carried out in Japan mainly for engineering purposes. Japanrnis seismically active country and many large earthquakes occur within a short time interval. Aydan’srnmethod was used to infer the crustal stresses from focal plane solutions. In this study, focal planernsolutions of large earthquakes occurred in Japan since 1891 are used to infer the contemporary crustalrnstresses in Japan and its close vicinity. These inferences are presented and compared with availablernin-situ stress measurements. The outcomes and their implications are briefly discussed.
