Modern Bulk Materials terminals are heavily reliant on achieving high productivity through the use of large, high capacity rail mounted equipment such as shiploaders, shipunloaders, container cranes, stackers, reclaimers etc. These are large moving structures with relatively onerous load conditions compared to standard building structures. Structural failures and associated injuries, damage and loss of availability of rail mounted machines are usually due to a combination of causes of which design may only be one of the factors. Method of operation, deterioration and wear as well as human error are often also contributory. Rather than relying on a prescriptive approach as normally embodied in codes and regulations, a more fundamental risk based methodology has been developed.
