This paper discusses the work undertaken during the design and commissioning stages of the BHP Steel No.6 Blast Furnace Project at Port Kembla, NSW, Australia which was aimed at ensuring raw material size and type segregation through the stock feed system be minimised, characterised and fully understood. Reduced scale and full scale model testing techniques were applied to a number of the stock feed system components in order to finalise design specifications. An extensive raw materials testing program was incorporated into the commissioning phase of the project to ensure all aspects of the stock feed system were fully understood prior to the furnace coming on line.
