In 1997 the Public Works Government Services of Canada and the Federal Aviation Administration initiated a field project to evaluate the performance of Open Graded Drainage Layers (OGDL) for airfields. The project consisted of constructing and instrumenting two pavement test sections. The Control Test Section consists of a 65 mm asphalt surface course over a 230 mm crushed granular base over a 600 mm granular subbase. For the Test Section, the top 100 mm of the base material were replaced with an asphalt- stabilized OGDL. Instrumentation to measure in situ volumetric moisture content, water level, and temperature was installed and data collected. The overall approach is to compare the performance of the two test sections side by side. This paper details the project, presents data collected for the period 1997―2001, and provides some preliminary conclusions regarding the performance of Open Graded Bases for airfields.
