A prototype of an industrial burner for confined swirling natural gas/air diffusion flames is presented as a standard burner within the TECFLAM research cooperation. The main goal of the investigation is the establishment of an extensive data base from well-defined target flames in order to better understand the physical and chemical processes in these flames and to provide a test case for the verification of predictions from numerical simulations. The results presented in this paper were measured by laser Doppler velocimetry and laser Raman scattering and comprise flow velocities, temperature, major species concentrations, and mixture fraction in a flame of 150 kW and swirl number 0.9. The measurements yielded a detailed characterization of the different flame regions: a compact inner recirculation zone with hot combustion products, an outer recirculation zone with rather uniform flow field and chemical equilibrium composition at medium temperatures, and a highly turbulent region formed by the inlet flows where strong effects of turbulent-chemistry interactions were observed.
