We investigate the performance of several parallel interference cancellation (PIC) techniques in transmission over fading multipath channels under the 3GPP WCDMA specifications, including one architecture which employs a receiving antenna array. The specifications are such that the spreading factor can be low, which might accentuate the problem of multiple-access interference. By way of computer simulation, PIC and antenna array reception are shown to provide significant gain in transmission performance or system capacity in this situation. Three different decision disciplines for PIC are considered. The simulation result shows that the signal reception performance clearly improves with the softness of the decision.
