The automobile imposes challenging requirements on display technology. The requirements of wide temperature operation, environmental durability, reliability, long life, good optical performance including sunlight readability and viewing cone, and relatively low cost are all critical to a successful OEM automotive application. Presently, OEM electronic displays are LED, vacuum fluorescent (VF), or twisted nematic LCD displays. Most of these displays are low resolution, segmented or small dot matrix arrays with multiplexing factors of 14:1 or less. Larger passive matrix and active matrix LCD displays have been applied to the automobile, primarily in after market products, but also are beginning to appear in OEM products. The coming wave of Mobile Multi-Media products will accelerate the need for reconfigurable, full color displays in the 1/4 VGA or greater array sizes.
