This paper is concerned with the microstructural studies on the fabrication of composite filler metal (CFM), which has self-brazing capability on dissimilar materials. The CFM was produced by a combination of selective laser sintering of stainless steel powders and liquid phase infiltration of Ag-28wt.%Cu alloy. The SUS304/CFM/S10C joints, which have narrow clearance gaps between them up to 10 micrometers, were completely brazed by in-situ feeding of filler metal from the matrix of CFM. The large clearance gap and blushing promoted the formation of flow-out voids in CFM and unfilled void at the joint interface. The experimental results on the self-brazing capability of CFM would be applied where there are some requirements to join net-shape complex parts of MMC together without adding extra filler metals.
