SUCROSE RICH SUSTAINABLE EARLY MATURING VARIETIES FOR UTTAR PRADESH

Improving yield of sugar through increasing purity and sucrose content of juice for a longer crushing period is more, economic. Ten elite early maturing sugarcane varieties viz. CoS 8436, CoS 87216, CoS 88230, CoS, 95255, CoS 95270, CoS 96258, CoS 96268, CoS 97258, standards CoS 687 and CoJ 64 were evaluated under autumn planting conditions, in two plant crops during 1997-99 (first plant crop) and 1999-2001 (second plant crop) at Sugarcane Research Institute, Shahjahanpur U.P. The study was aimed to identify the sucrose rich, early maturing sugarcane variety with sustainability at peak maturity for Uttat Pradesh. Early clones viz. CoS 96268, CoS 97258, CoS 95255 and CoS 96258 were found to be superior for sucrose percent in juice over the standard CoS 687. The early clone CoS 96268 followed by CoS 97258 werer found rich in sugar content from October to March, compared to best standard CoJ 64. Peak maturity of these early varieties were attained in February and it was sustained up to the end of March. Based on the over all performance of these entries for sustainability of sucrose percent in juice at peak maturity, (he premium early maturing varieties CoS 96268 followed by CoS 97258 and CoS 95255 were found superior to the best standard CoJ 64 and all other clones studied. No. sharp drop in sucrose content was observed in these cultivars during the crushing period starting fror mid October to end of the March.
