Safety forms a part of all aspects of life everywhere, round the clock, be at home, the road or in the industry. Nature has provided us all, 5 senses, which guide against any likely violation of safety by giving adequate warning against possible dangers. Like other activities, safety also forms a very special ingredient for overall performance of factories but more so in case of sugar factory, being seasonal in nature, handling corrosive substances, high temp. & pressure steam/Air /Corrosive gases, various types of drives etc. etc. Manufacture of Sugar starts from planting of cane, harvesting, transporting, weighment, cane feeding, cane preparation, milling, steam production, power generation and distribution, clarification including preparation of milk of lime & production. of SO_2 gas, heating, sedimentation, filtration, evaporation, crystallization, centrifuging, grading and storage in sugar godowns & then finally loading & despatch. All these stages present safety hazards until and unless specific safety measures are taken, at each stage. This paper deals in detail some aspects of safety viz. common causes of Accidents, Wrong work practices. How to prevent, Safety consciousness & Education. Data collection etc. etc. just to refresh the importance of safety in season & off-season in a Sugar Factory.
