摘要

The physiology of C4 grasses received special attention in the last two decades. The earlier concepts emphasised for larger leaves and more number of these on the plant under non-restricted conditions. This was further examined through factors like leaf length, leaf width or leaf area besides interveinal features in a leaf and these in turn were cited as having relationship to juice sucrose content. Therefore arguments were advanced that in selection of sucrose - rich varieties, these can be treated or deemed as useful criteria for selection of sucrose - rich varieties. The quantum of samples taken for advancement of such a projection, does not seem to be adequate. However even by detaild study through phenotypic correlations, it has not been possible to relate with confidence the quality to the above criteria. It is therefore proposed that a detailed further study of morphegenetic, biotechnological factors influencing either genetically or biochemically this phenomenon, needs to be undertaken and fully explored.
