Traditionally, online Fibre property measurements of kraft pulp have not been performed until the end of the Fibreline, before the finished product is fed to the pulp dryer or paper machine. At this point there is no opportunity to correct for Fibre quality damage earlier in the process. This problem has been overcome by the newest development of an online Kappa analyzer which includes also an online Fibre-Shive module. This development provides new possibilities to measure Fibre properties and shive content online in the early stages of the Fibreline where process conditions are harshest to Fibres. The new measurement capability, anywhere from the digester blow to finished pulp, opens new possibilities to understand more deeply the Fibre delignification process dynamics and the impact on the Fibre properties. This gives new and unique possibilities to manage the Fibreline for better pulp and Fibre quality.rnOnline Fibre and shive measurements in early Fibreline process stages are introduced in this study. Fibre degradation is more obvious in these early stages. The accuracy of the measurements is confirmed by comparing the results to older technology and laboratory measurements.rnThis paper demonstrates practical experiences and observations of online Fibre and shive measurements at several important and strategic points in a Fibreline. The potential of the new process information for more efficient process management, diagnostics and pulp quality control is discussed. New ideas and solutions for process management applications in pulp and paper mills are presented.
