Changes in furnace electrical design parameters, operating practices, expansion of computer based controls, in addition to the increase in use of chemical energy have had significant effects on the energy efficiency of arc melting. Twenty five years ago at this conference electrical energy consumptions were reported for UHP furnaces in the ranges of 515 to 546 kWH/mt~7, and in 1999 a study of 35 furnaces showed a median energy consumption of 392 kWH/mt~8.
