Stantec Global Technologies Ltd (Stantec) has developed a proprietary process called Goodfellow EFSOP~(TM) (Expert Furnace System Optimization Process) which is capable of measuring the off-gas chemistry at the fourth hole of an EAF in real time. The gases that are measured and analyzed continuously are CO, CO_2, H_2 and O_2. The measurement of these gases enables operators for the first time to use real time process measurements to optimize chemical energy (carbon, natural gas, O_2) via proven melting models and cost algorithms. This breakthrough technology has been commercialized at seven (7) installations and has demonstrated improvements in energy efficiency, increased productivity and lower conversion costs. The paper provides details on energy sources for an EAF, a technical description of the Goodfellow ESOP~(TM) Technology, a brief description of our proprietary EAF computer models, benefits to steel makers based on off-gas chemistry measurements, and a roadmap to the future.
