This paper discusses the PRIMUS~(~R) process for the treatment of various zinc and iron bearing residues. Using coal as the reductant and energy source, Paul Wurth has developed this multiple-hearth furnace technology for the separation of zinc from the treated material. Using a two stage process, a 95 % pure crude zinc oxide is produced. Furthermore, the reduction furnace produces a highly metallized iron concentrate that can be melted and cast into pig iron using an electric arc furnace.
