As compared to more traditional instrumentation like pressure and temperature transmitters, online process analyzers offer less calibration stability and are more prone to ambient and process environmental factors. It therefore requires more maintenance surveillance than traditional instrumentation design and needs to be better protected against the adverse effects of harsh ambient and process conditions. This paper explains the effects of controlling undue variance in calibration results and what the probability is of accruing error volume over time as a result of the maintenance regime. It provides also the concepts of control over analyzer performance and its technical implementation and the resulting level of maintenance intervention.
