From a modern reliability engineering perspective, the collection of constant amplitude fatigue life data does not significantly contribute to an organization's effort to improving product reliability. A more proactive strategy would include studies aimed at understanding the underlying mechanism and physics of failure along with the subsequent identification of design improvements to bring about improved reliability. Studies must be conducted in such a way that will result in robust product performance with respect to environmental influences and other factors that contribute to early wear-out or fatigue. A framework for accomplishing this is suggested.
