An Example of WiMAX Application Deployment in Campus Environments

Students often use their notebooks, handsets or Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) to access Internet or download the course materials from the campus website through the 802.11 access points (APs) that are deployed in the campus buildings. HoweveT, there are some places such as playground which are far away from the buildings and there are no available network lines to connect the APs to the campus backbone. In these areas without available network lines, we utilize WiMAX to extend wireless access coverage to 90%. Moreover, to attract the students to use WiMAX environment, we also deploy several interesting SIP applications. This paper first describes NIU WiMAX deployment including the radio access network and core network. Then, three SIP applications are described in this paper.
