The effect of paper forming variables on the properties of sheets formed from three BEK pulps is reported. Sheets were formed on the UoM sheet former at various stock consistencies (0.3 ― 0.7%) and velocities (0.35 ― 0.65 m/s) within a range comparable to that used commercially. The formation of the sheets was measured using a beta-ray tester and the fibre orientation was determined by ultrasonic test methods. The general dependence of properties on process conditions were similar to those reported for short fibre stocks on commercial papermachines ― lower stock concentration led to improved formation, intermediate forming speed (jet ― wire difference) also improved formation. A boundary layer filtration mechanism consistent with that reported for short fibre species was observed during forming. The relative formation potential of pulps was maintained over a range of process conditions.
