Various materials were evaluated as an outdoor jacket material that would meet performance and handling requirements for -50℃ temperature applications in outside plant pedestals or cabinets.The screening criteria used included coefficient of friction measurements, aged handling and tensile testing to determine lifetime, jacket shrinkage and environmental and mechanical performance testing.The preferred solution incorporates a fungus and ultraviolet resistant TPE jacket to meet cold temperature handling and performance requirements. To summarize the cable design: Environmental: 1. Exceeds temperature cycling requirements of GR-409 meeting attenuation requirements at a temperature of -50℃ using single-mode fiber. Mechanical: 2. Meets interconnect requirements of GR-409 for tensile, impact, crush and jacket shrinkage. 3. Meets residual strain requirements of ICEA-596 tensile. 4. Exceeds cold bend requirements of GR-409 meeting -40℃.
